TAP
– Using hard-soled shoes with metal plates on the
bottom, tap is the classic American style of dance. Emphasis
on counting and execution of percussive sound makes this
class ideal for the beginning dancer, while difficult
rhythmic patterns challenge the advanced student. Ages
4 – Adult.
JAZZ
– Commonly associated
with the type of dance seen in current music videos
and television specials, jazz is an energetic combination
of classical ballet technique and upbeat, popular music.
Variations of jazz can include hip-hop and pom, at the
instructor’s discretion. Soft-sole shoes are usually
worn to allow for maximum flexibility and extension.
Ages 7 – Adult or by teacher recommendation.
BALLET
– As the foundation for all disciplines of dance,
ballet is the essential class for any student wishing
to maximize his/her abilities as a dancer. Classic technique
at the barre and across the floor teaches discipline
and correct body placement. Soft-soled shoes are worn
to allow for maximum flexibility. The advanced student
may progress to dancing on pointe shoes, at the instructor’s
recommendation only. Ages 5 – Adult.
LYRICAL
– This modern style is the choreographer’s
expression of a song’s lyrics. Classic ballet
technique is incorporated, and the dancer is coached
on interpreting the meaning of a song and converting
it to movement. Soft-soled shoes (or no shoes) are worn
to allow for maximum flexibility and contact with the
floor. Must have 2+ years ballet or jazz experience,
and/or teacher recommendation. Ages 12– Adult.
TECHNIQUE
CLASS
– Students already taking class at Christie’s
are encouraged to receive additional instruction that
will assist in developing their overall technical dance
abilities, including turns, leaps, kicks and body positioning.
Progressions across the floor, as well as center floor
and barre work, are used to advance the student from
a primary level to advanced status in this non-performance
class. Ideal for students already studying jazz or ballet,
as it is a continuation of technique learned during
regular class time. Ages 7-Adult as indicated by teacher.
HIP
HOP
– This newer genre is a combination of multiple
street dance styles, primarily danced to popular hip
hop music. Since the first original style of "breakdancing"
in the 80's, hip hop has evolved to include steps that
focus more on upright dancing rather than the original
ground-based steps. Isolation of body parts and strong,
popping movements are common today, and what is taught
in studio hip hop is often comparable to what is shown
on music videos to hip hop music on MTV or BET. Offered
only as special sessions, choreographed appropriately
for ages 7-13 or 14-Adult.
PILATES
– Pilates focuses on the core postural muscles
that help keep the body balanced and are essential to
providing support for the spine. In particular, Pilates
exercises teach awareness of breath and alignment of
the spine, and strengthen the deep torso muscles, which
are important to help alleviate and prevent back pain
and also assist dancers in obtaining proper balance
and strength needed for a successful dance career. Ages
12 - Adult, or by instructor recommendation. |
